Google to buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion

Google, whose ubiquitous search engine redefined how consumers and businesses access the Web, turned its sites on disrupting the mobile industry Monday, announcing that it has reached a deal to acquire Motorola Mobility for $40 per share in cash, or about $12.5 billion in total.

The price represents a whopping 63% premium over Motorola Mobility's closing share price Friday.

The proposed acquisition, which would be the biggest in Google's history if approved by regulators, is a clear sign that the search giant intends to go head-to-head with Apple as a provider of complete mobile systems, chiefly Android-based smartphones and tablets, that feature tight integration of hardware and software. Also in Google's crosshairs: Microsoft and its partner Nokia, and RIM.

"Motorola Mobility's total commitment to Android has created a natural fit for our two companies," said Google CEO Larry Page, in a statement. "Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners, and developers. I look forward to welcoming Motorolans to our family of Googlers."

Data centers are bursting with unstructured content that needs to be stored.
Cloud Storage for Dummies explains the benefits of cloud storage and details how to get started.

In a blog post, Page said Motorola’s patent portfolio was also a factor in the deal. “Our acquisition of Motorola will increase competition by strengthening Google’s patent portfolio, which will enable us to better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft, Apple, and other companies.” Both Microsoft and Apple claim Android violates some of their patents. The acquisition of Motorola Mobility could put Google in a better position to launch counterclaims.

Still, Google officials said the transaction, which requires approval from regulators in the United States and Europe, would not signal the end of Android as an open platform. They also said Google has no plans to end partnerships with other third-party hardware makers.

"Our vision for Android is unchanged and Google remains firmly committed to Android as an open platform and a vibrant open source community. We will continue to work with all our valued Android partners to develop and distribute innovative Android-powered devices," said Andy Rubin, Google's senior VP of mobile, in a statement.

Motorola Mobility was spun off from parent Motorola, Inc., earlier this year. Its two main businesses are mobile devices and digital set-top boxes. Company executives said the tie-up with Google will create a number of new marketing possibilities for Motorola Mobility, which will operate as a separate unit of Google.

"This transaction offers significant value for Motorola Mobility's stockholders and provides compelling new opportunities for our employees, customers, and partners around the world. We have shared a productive partnership with Google to advance the Android platform, and now through this combination we will be able to do even more to innovate and deliver outstanding mobility solutions across our mobile and home businesses," said Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha, in a statement.

The deal is part of an ongoing shakeup of the competitive landscape in the red-hot mobile industry as top vendors vie for position. Nokia, still the world's largest handset maker by volume, is in the process of porting the entirety of its U.S. product lineup to Windows Phone 7. RIM's share of the smartphone market is fading--its new tablet, the PlayBook, has underwhelmed many and this week was dropped from Sprint's 4G lineup.

Google's Android operating system, which currently runs on hardware from Motorola, HTC, and other vendors, is already the dominant smartphone and tablet OS in the United States, with a share of about 40.1%, according to Comscore. Apple's iOS holds a 26.6% stake, while RIM has 23.4% of the market. Windows mobility software has just 5.8%.

Motorola Mobility's share of the U.S. smartphone and tablet hardware market stood at 14.5% through June 30, behind LG's 21.3% share and Samsung's 25.3% stake.

Google said it expects the deal, which drew unanimous approval from the boards of both companies, to close by late 2011 or early 2012.

Worldwide sales of mobile devices up 16.5 percent in Q2, Smartphones accounting for 25% of overall sales

Worldwide sales of mobile devices to end users totalled 428.7 million units in the second quarter of this year, a 16.5 percent increase from the second quarter of 2010, according to a study by Gartner. The channel built up stock at the end of the first quarter in preparation of possible component shortages following the Japanese earthquake.

As a result, sell-in demand slowed in the second quarter of 2011 to 421.1 million units, a 4.4 percent decrease from the previous quarter.

Sales of smartphones were up 74 percent and accounted for 25 percent of overall sales, up from 17 percent in the second quarter of 2010.  This is supported by operator promotions on low and mid-range smartphones, which consumers are choosing over feature phones, Gartner said. However, replacement sales in Western Europe showed signs of fatigue as smartphone sales declined quarter-on-quarter.

Gartner expects manufacturers and distributors to remain cautious about raising their stock levels in the second half of 2011, following the recent uncertainty on world financial markets. The market researcher expects sales of mobile devices to grow around 12 percent in the full year 2011.

In smartphones, Nokia’s sales into the channel in the second quarter of 2011 were low. This was partly due to a very competitive market that deflated demand for Symbian, but also to inventory management issues in Europe and China in particular. Samsung achieved strong growth in sales of mobile devices. The Galaxy S II sold well, and this model went on to chalk up 5 million in sales by the end of July. A strong performance in the smartphone market helped Samsung increase its market share to become the third-largest smartphone vendor. However, its overall share dropped year-on-year, and grew only marginally quarter-on-quarter, mainly due to Samsung’s weaker presence in more price-sensitive market segments.

Apple continued to exceed expectations, even though the iPhone 4 will soon be replaced by a new model. Part of its growth came from the 42 new carriers and fifteen new countries that brought its total coverage to 100 countries. In mainland China, Apple is the seventh-largest mobile phone vendor and the third-largest smartphone vendor.

RIM’s share of the smartphone market declined to 12 percent, from 19 percent a year ago. Also, the company lost its number five position in the worldwide ranking of mobile device vendors to ZTE. Demand for RIM’s devices in the second quarter was impaired by an ageing portfolio and delays in shipping products.

Google and Apple are the obvious winners in the smartphone ecosystem. The combined share of iOS and Android in the smartphone OS market doubled to nearly 62 percent in the second quarter, up from over 31 percent in the corresponding period of 2010.

Is the end of the PC era near?

PCs are going the way of typewriters according to an engineer who worked on the original IBM PC.  In a blog post to mark the 30th anniversary of the IBM PC 5150, Dr Mark Dean made the comments, saying that PCs were no longer at the leading edge of computing.

Mark Dean

Pointing out that no single device had taken over, instead we were seeing a number of devices based on the “socially-mediated innovation” that has been developed in the last few years.  The IBM 5150 was launched on August 12th 1981.  In his post, Dean said ”When I helped design the PC, I didn’t think I’d live long enough to witness its decline.”  He noted with some sadness that his own primary computer was now a tablet.

It’s amazing to me to think that August 12 marks the 30th anniversary of the IBM Personal Computer. The announcement helped launch a phenomenon that changed the way we work, play and communicate.  Little did we expect to create an industry that ultimately peaked at more than 300 million unit sales per year. I’m proud that I was one of a dozen IBM engineers who designed the first machine and was fortunate to have lead subsequent IBM PC designs through the 1980s.

He went on to comment that ”It’s becoming clear that innovation flourishes best not on devices but in the social spaces between them, where people and ideas meet and interact, it is there that computing can have the most powerful impact on economy, society and people’s lives.”

IBM itself moved away from the desktop PC market some years ago after losing out to companies such as HP and Dell.  It eventually sold it’s laptop business to the Chinese and now concentrates on the server market.  The company still maintains revenues higher than Microsoft for the server hardware that it sells.

It is amazing when you think about it, that PCs are still with us.  The colours might have changed, but the traditional box and keyboard haven’t changed much at all in the last 30 years.

Around 400 million PCs are sold each year and it may be that Dean’s prediction is premature.  Business is still the largest users of PCs worldwide and businesses have a long-earned reputation for moving very slowly with new technologies.  Given the additional software development costs they face it’s very likely that the traditional desktop PC will still be a feature of offices around the globe for two decades to come.

That said, consumers are now moving towards tablets and other devices including smartphones and netbooks as their main computer.  Only serious content creators and hard core gamers still evangelise about the PC in the way we used to last decade.

So who knows at this point what the future holds for the humble desktop PC.  Certainly we will see them commonly morph into all-in-one machines but battery technology still isn’t good enough to convince the masses to switch to portable and mobile devices.  While tablets such as the iPad can boast impressive battery lives of up to 16 hours on a single charge, most devices will still run out of power after four.

So, happy 30th birthday to the IBM 5150, you started a revolution that has impacted positively on mankind, generated incalculable numbers of jobs in all manner of industries, and that has even created hundreds of new industries in the process.

British PM, David Cameron, proposes social media ban

British Prime Minister David Cameron thinks he's found some culprits to blame in the recent riots that have rocked London and other cities -- Facebook and Twitter.

Saying the "free flow of information" can sometimes be a problem, Cameron's government has summoned those two social-networking sites, as well as Research In Motion, makers of the BlackBerry, for a meeting to discuss their roles during the violent outbreaks.

"Everyone watching these horrific actions will be struck by how they were organized via social media," Cameron said Thursday during an address to Parliament. "Free flow of information can be used for good. But it can also be used for ill. And when people are using social media for violence, we need to stop them."

Cameron said that government officials are working with authorities "to look at whether it would be right to stop people communicating via these websites and services when we know they are plotting violence, disorder and criminality."

More than 1,200 people have been arrested nationwide, Cameron told lawmakers. One estimate found that UK retailers lost more than than £100 million ($161 million) in stolen goods and property damage over four nights of rioting.

Cameron, a Conservative, seems to have support for a potential crackdown, even from members of the opposition Labor Party.

"Free speech is central to our democracy, but so is public safety and security," said Ivan Lewis, the shadow secretary of culture in the House of Commons, according to London's Guardian newspaper. "We support the government's decision to undertake a review of whether measures are necessary to prevent the abuse of social media by those who organize and participate in criminal activities."

Home Secretary Theresa May has called for meetings with the three companies in the coming weeks, according to British media.

Many UK rioters reportedly used BlackBerry Messenger, a free, private instant-messaging tool, to organize. A recent survey found that 37% of British teens prefer BlackBerrys to other smartphones.

Twitter and Facebook have been used as well, although those sites also have been used to organize cleanup efforts and calls for peace in the wake of riots that started in London's Tottenham district on Saturday after police shot and killed a man.

Representatives of Facebook and Twitter said they're happy to meet with the government, although both would presumably object to being censored or shut down in the UK.

Twitter has said it has no intention to block accounts or delete posts, while Facebook has said publicly that it already shut down pages that explicitly incited violence.

Research in Motion's Inside BlackBerry blog was hacked Tuesday after the Canadian smartphone maker suggested it would cooperate with London police to help identify rioters who may have used BlackBerrys to plan mayhem.

Open-Web and free-speech advocates immediately objected to Cameron's language.

"It may be tempting to smother that kind of speech when a government feels it is under siege, as Britain seems to feel that it is," wrote Matthew Ingram of tech blog GigaOm. "But doing this represents nothing less than an attack on the entire concept of freedom of speech, and that has some frightening consequences for any democracy."

Ingram questioned whether the government would be cracking down on telephone use or people talking about the unrest at their local pub if social media didn't exist. "That seems unlikely (although not impossible). But the British government's apparent willingness to consider shutting down or blocking access to Twitter and BlackBerry's BBM falls into the same category."

On ReadWriteWeb, writer Curt Hopkins said Cameron "joins the long line of powerful men who totally miss the point of social media."

"Banning those convicted of crimes from accessing social networks (the idea being that they used such access to organize criminal activities) is no different than banning the same criminals from accessing goose quills and ink pots," Hopkins wrote. "It will have zero effect on crime, aside from criminalizing social media itself."

Google takes swing at Facebook in social games ( Angry Birds, Zynga)

The search giant's Google+ social site on Thursday unleashed a move into casual games with such titles as Angry Birds and Zynga Poker, putting it squarely on a collision course with the social-networking giant. Initially, Google+ is undercutting its rival on the slice of money taken from game developers, upping the ante in the ongoing battle for social status.

Facebook takes 30% of revenue from in-game transactions on games on its service, while developers keep 70%. At first, Google+ will offer developers 95% of such payments and keep just 5%, Google said.

That's a way to woo developers to consider Google+ first, says Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter. "And somebody will. There's a lot of guys who have a lot of trouble getting noticed on Facebook."

At first only a subset of the 10 million-plus Google+ members have access to the initial set of 16 games. Those users who have games available will see a Games icon at the top of the Google+ page.

Games and game-related updates do not appear in Google+ members' news "streams" as they originally did in Facebook news feeds. These days, Facebook games appear along the left rail of the main interface. Google's will be on a separate page.

That falls in line with Google's effort to make its social site less cluttered with news feed updates, a common criticism of Facebook.

Most of Zynga's major hit games, including CityVille, FarmVille and the new Empires & Allies, are exclusive to Facebook..

Still, the early roster for Google+ includes games from top developers such as Dragon Age Legends (Electronic Arts), Bejeweled Blitz (PopCap Games), City of Wonder (Playdom), Zombie Lane (Digital Chocolate), and Monster World (Wooga).

"Google is going after Facebook seriously," Pachter says. "The trick is, is there anything Google+ is doing that Facebook can't rip off? … If a game shows up on Google+ and gets any traction, then immediately that person can go over to Facebook and say, 'Promote my game.'"

Facebook countered late Thursday with a series of tweaks to its games platform.

Does Google need Firefox? Is it interested to re-sign with its top competitor, firefox?

Whenever we write a glowing story about Firefox or Mozilla, the ExtremeTech postbag has a tendency to fill up with letters and missives from concerned readers who are worried about Mozilla’s close ties with Google. Almost the entirety of Mozilla’s income — 97% of $104 million — arrives in the form of royalties from the Firefox search box, and the lion’s share (86%, $85 million) of those royalties are paid by the default search engine: Google.

In November 2011, however, Mozilla’s contract with Google will expire. It will then be renewed… or it will be allowed to lapse.

It is speculated, mostly by tech pundits, that considering the sheer amount of effort that it’s putting into shoving Chrome down our throats, it would not be in Google’s best interests to re-sign with Mozilla. After all, Chrome is one of the largest cogs in the Google machine, and Firefox is its strongest competitor. Why should Big G continue to bolster the saurians of Mountain View when Firefox is stealing and preventing users from installing Chrome?

For one simple reason: money. While it’s true that Mozilla strongly relies on Google’s royalties, don’t forget that Google is completely reliant on search traffic: of the $8.58 billion revenue earned by Google in the first quarter of 2011, 97% of it is derived from advertising. In other words, Google’s status as the default search engine for the majority of 450 million Firefox users directly translates into millions — and possibly billions — of dollars of revenue. It’s the same story with Opera, which regularly holds an auction for its default search engine: search traffic is worth big bucks.

Of course you could argue that Google would be better off spending its $85 million on advertising Chrome or Android, but you have to remember that $85 million is the tiniest drop in Google’s sales and marketing bucket. In the first quarter of 2011 alone, Google spent over $1 billion on ads, almost double what it spent in the first quarter of 2010. If you extrapolate that out to a total of $4 billion for the year of 2011, Mozilla’s $85 million makes up 0.2% of Google’s total sales and marketing spend. In all likelihood, Firefox is probably the cheapest source of traffic that Google has.

Google’s other problem comes in the shape of Microsoft Bing, which might be making a huge loss ($2.6 billion last year!) but it’s also gaining significant traction both in the US and worldwide territories. If Google fails to renew its contract with Mozilla, do you think that Microsoft would blink an eye at spending $85 million for the majority share of Firefox’s 450 million surfers?

A better question to pose, however, is to turn the entire premise on its head and ask whether Mozilla wants to renew the contract with Google. For the most part, Google and Mozilla have very similar interests, but in recent months some fractures have started to show. Back in 2010, one of Mozilla’s noisiest bigwigs, Asa Dotzler, famously renounced Google because of its poor privacy policy, and started using Bing instead. At the time this wasn’t a big deal, but Dotzler is now the Director of Firefox Desktop — and when November rolls around, it’s safe to assume that he might vote for Bing to replace Google as the default search engine.

Bing, Firefox, and GoogleIf this actually happens — if Bing is suddenly the default search engine for hundreds of millions of surfers — then we’re talking about a monumental shift that would probably redefine the web.  To put it into perspective, Microsoft has spent billions on scraping away just a few percent of Google’s massive share to land itself with under 4% of the global search market. For $85 million — or whatever Mozilla decides to charge, because it could charge almost anything — Bing could bolster its global share to 10, 15, or maybe 20%. Google, in return, would lose huge swaths of its market and millions — or billions — of dollars in advertising revenue.

To conclude, Firefox has absolutely no need to worry about its revenue stream. It is Google’s single biggest source of search traffic, and one of the most important components of its entire business — losing Firefox would be a massive blow for Google, not the other way around. More importantly, however, if Bing becomes Firefox’s default search engine in November, the world would finally have a second search engine that might be able to stand up to the overwhelming and indomitable force of Google’s web supremacy.

There would be a beautiful poetic justice if Firefox drops Google, too. Back in 2003 when Mozilla and Firefox first emerged, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer owned 95% of the browser market. Mozilla single-handedly destroyed IE over the next five years and reinvented the web in the process — and now, almost 10 years on, Mozilla might return the favor and help Microsoft break Google’s monopoly.

Cars 2 The Video Game-RELOADED

Description: Cars 2:

The Video Game brings players inside the international training center CHROME (Command Headquarters for Recon Operations and Motorized Espionage), where they choose from more than 20 different characters and train to become world class spies. As part of their international training, they will participate in simulated hazardous missions using high-tech gadgets to evade and slow down adversaries.

Based on Pixar’s computer animated film, Cars 2: The Video Game follows the exploits of car characters Lightning McQueen and Mater as they train in a secret facility known as CHROME, short for Command Headquarters for Recon Operations and Motorized Espionage. They are joined by Finn McMissile and Holley Shiftwell as they attempt to become the car-equivalent of spies. The game introduces a number of lighthearted missions to complete, as you use each vehicle’s gadgets to escape from or to stop rivals. You’ll also be able to perform stunts such as backwards driving, air tricks, and two-wheel driving to complete goals. Cars 2: The Video Game also interfaces with the free-to-play World of Cars Online, allowing players to unlock rewards in both versions by completing specific tasks.
